Tobit

c. 225-175 BCE. A didactic story set in the Assyrian exile. Tobit goes blind after burying the dead in defiance of the king; his son Tobias travels with the angel Raphael in disguise, recovers a debt, marries Sarah after driving off the demon Asmodeus, and returns to heal his father. Themes: almsgiving, burial of the dead, endogamy, angelic guidance, providence. Aramaic and Hebrew fragments were found at Qumran. In Catholic and Orthodox Bibles; not in Jewish or Protestant canons.
