On the Placement of the Torah

described in the volume, no text in the public-domain sources

Genesis through Numbers appear here because the critical consensus places the final redaction of the Pentateuch in the Persian period. The traditions inside them are far older: the poems of Section I sit inside Exodus and Numbers, the priestly legislation preserves pre-exilic temple practice, and the narrative sources are usually dated to the monarchy. Deuteronomy is in Section III with Josiah's reform. Readers who follow the traditional Mosaic dating should read Genesis through Deuteronomy first, before Section I.
