Reaches its present form c. 165 BCE, during the persecution under Antiochus IV, though the court tales in chapters 1-6 are older. Chapters 7-12 are apocalyptic visions that read the history of empires forward to the end of that persecution and close with the earliest unambiguous statement of resurrection in the Hebrew Bible. Written partly in Hebrew and partly in Aramaic. Canonical everywhere; the Greek additions follow.
