2 Esdras (4 Ezra)

The Jewish core, chapters 3-14, was written c. 100 CE in response to the destruction of the temple in 70, and takes the form of seven dialogues in which Ezra presses an angel on why God permits the suffering of his own people. Chapters 1-2 and 15-16 are later Christian additions. Placed here because of its date, not because it is a New Testament book: it is canonical in Orthodox and Ethiopian traditions and printed in a Catholic appendix, but stands outside the Jewish and Protestant canons.
